Re: Ever heard of a Thompson boat

Thompson was a major boat manufacturer that went bankrupt in the early nineties. They made some pretty popular boats. I seem to remember reading somewhere a few years ago where another company had bought the molds for one of their most popular models, the 240 fisherman, and they were going to produce it again but haven't heard anything about it since. They used to be just about as common as Searay's are, at least here on the Great Lakes.

I was looking real hard at one four years ago.

Re: Ever heard of a Thompson boat

I own a 1976 Thompson hardtop cabin cruiser. It's a big old tough boat with really great lines. I love this boat. Looked into buying a newer one but rode in Bayliners etc that were not near as stable. Do my boating here in Alaska and when seas come up and things get hairy I'll trust that tough old hull to get me home. Been in 6' plus seas and had water come over the bow several times. I'm here to write about it.
I have just finished up a two year complete refit of this boat instead of buying new (no plastic tub toys). New engine, stern drive, wiring, carpet, cabinets, radar, chart plotter, sonar, etc. I know what I have from the keel up and am still less than a new boat by a long way.
My advice is if you find a Thompson in decent shape buy it and spend the money re-fitting it to suit you. You'll be money ahead over buying one of these new plastic tub toys. Just my 2 cents worth.
Gotta go check the smoker. More salmon are ready....

Owned a 1956 Thomson 15 foot lapstrake runabout. Bought it used, rebuilt the transom, stripped a couple coats of paint and tightened the hundreds of little brass bolts that held this thing together. Varnished the interior to look like the day it was new.. Very nice ride. Sold it with the cabin many years later.
