Engine Overheats When Idling

When idling (trolling) my engine's over heat alarm is frequently sounding. If I put it in neutral and rev it up a bit, the alarm goes off...and I can go back to trolling for another 15 minutes or so. Engine runs just fine at higher RPMs.

Any idea of what might be causing this?

Thanks

It is the poppit valve. Back side of the block usually lower stbd. corner. Should be two bolts securing the flange, hose also is connected to flange.

What is this valve supposed to do?

Can it be repaired or will I have to replace it or what?

Thanks

Needs to be replaced. Poppit valve, grommet, spring, and gasket. It is a pretty straight forward remove and replace. Do a search for poppit vaive and you should find some good advice, Be careful not to let the grommet fall into the opening. Good luck

Inducted,

Thanks for your help. Looked at valve, spring etc. Looked OK and dealer did not stock it so I did not replace it. Put pump kit in and new thermostats. Problem solved.
