I am doing an electric start conversion in my 1974 evinrude 25 hp. I am curious if anyone can tell me the compatible years for parts I’m searching for? I think it is 69-76 and 18,20 and 25 hp Thanks in advance

I should add that if your flywheel does not have a ring gear. You will need to find a 74-76 flywheel with a ring gear.

Most / many of them came with the ring gear.----A donor motor say $100 or less is the best way to do this.

Yes I think all the ones I've seen have had a ring gear. I bought 2 parts motors with electric start this year because they are asking over 300 us $ just for the bracket.

Thanks for all the tips. I will search for a donor motor. I’ve been looking some but nothing so far. I will continue my search. In Michigan now headed towards home in Fla. may find one on the way.

When I checked part #s for the kit(s) in my 1974 OMC Accessories brochure there were several kits listed.

First was the remote start for dash starting, # 171847 is listed as being for 18 & 20 through 1968 (which sounds like 1957 through).

Second is # 172401 and is listed as being for 18 (Evinrude), 20 (Johnson) & 25s 1969 through (likely through 76 ultimately). This version includes a quick-disconnect plug at the motor.

There is also a standard electric start kit with the starter button on the motor. # 171845 is listed as being for 18, 20 & 25 through 1971... (Beginning in 1972 electric start became available factory installed. It is kind of fuzzy as to whether this kit will convert later rope start 25 through '76. Probably, but that is what my catalogue says.)

Anyway that is my 2ç

Find a donor motor while in fresh water country. You need the starter bracket and starter, along with a flywheel with ring gear. Beyond that, you can improvise.
