I bought a new Evinrude Yachtwin 4 HP in 1987, Model E4RLCUD. To reverse, you turn the motor backwards and shift from Neutral to Forward. The motor has run flawlessly all these years except for one annoying
thing. When you turn the motor to the reverse position, the idle speed drops and the motor stalls.
I have compensated for this by setting the idle speed much too high. Is there something I can do about this?

Re: Dies in reverse.

Do you have the motor mounted out of perpendicular? If so, when you're going slow forward the carb is facing downhill. But spin the motor around for reverse and the carb is facing uphill. Could affect the fuel flow. Just a thought. Also, spinning the motor 180 degress for reverse affects the position of the fuel line itself. Could put stress on a bad o-ring in the fuel line connectors, allowing air in. Check the fuel line connectors - maybe borrow another fuel line and see if it changes things.
