I am trying to locate a lower gear-case housing for my 1977 70 hp Evinrude w/ 20" transom. I have found several that look alike, but how can I be sure that I have the right one?. How do I know for sure that I am looking at the right part? How can I look for more than one part number that is compatible to my specific year and hp needed? Is there some type of cross referance book that gives the original part and then the part/year/model# that could be interchanged?

Re: cross referance chart

If it is 1973 & newer, has the same bolt pattern and the driveshaft splines are the same (yours should have 4 splines) it will work. Now, the early mechanical shift units shifted backwards from later ones. If you buy one that shifts opposite of yours youll need the shift linkage off of the powerhead the gearcase came from.

Or use an aftermarket shift & throttle control that the cable position can be reversed.
