A question here friends: I?m rebuilding my 1980 115 J, and it has seal rings for the crankshaft, but I can?t find any info about how the rings openings go, should they go all (with the block on a bench) facing down (crankcase), up (crankcase cover), alternated, ????

I think anywhere but aligned from where crankcase meets its cover (obviously). Somebody knows?

Thanks!!

Staggered it'll make an extra 10 hp. Lined up you'll lose 10.

Seriously it doesn't matter. OMC used to say to stagger them. Merc lines them up. Seen both brands both ways, makes no difference.

Stagger them facing up as you put the other half of the crankcase on. Facing up you can keep an eye on them. Done this with OMC's for years.
