cracked parts on my johnson

long story short.
my 84 johnson ob fell over and cracked one of the transom clamps and snapped the shifting lever off.
the motor still runs fine just tested it today.
i am wondering how hard of a fix this would be, and if with the transom clamp if i can just take a piece of sheet metal and put it over it with a couple screws through it.

you have 2 bolt holes and one transom clamp. you could also try to get the clamp welded. i would thru bolt it, and use the one clamp and try it. the shift lever is replaceable. part# 0384477 SHIFT LEVER & PIN 1 $90.00 USD http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=bf6ad09c53cead335fcfd8a6471c0f7f

tx1961, that is just wrong man, funny, but wrong.

I painted my outboard this winter and was terrified of doing this exact thing the whole time it was off the boat, had it hanging from the roof joists in the garage and went to open the door, well it hit the 2x4 the motor was hanging from and the door reversed, I made it to the motor just in time to catch it before it hit the floor, a 50 is really really heavy when dropped from 3' in the air.

I personally wouldn't trust a couple screws on that part, it takes alot of stress, I would want it welded at least and even that is iffy, I would really hate to watch my motor going to visit Davy Jones.

Were it me I would even teather the motor to the boat till I was certain whatever you do to fix it works, but new parts are best.

Look around on Ebay, guys are always parting out motors there and you have pretty good chance of finding something, you may luck into a parts motor and get your shift lever too.

Well from the second picture it looks like you have your wallet out. That looks about right...it's only money!
