installing a new thermostat in my 85 mercruiser 170hp, 3.7L/4cyl. Have a question in regards to the direction i should mount the new one...

According to the diagram, the thermostat looks like it's mounted pointed upwards. I am 99% certain the one I pulled out was mounted facing downwards.

my thermostat installation diagram looks like:
http://www.webnetxpress.com/tinstall.jpg

and the actual thermostat looks like:
http://www.webnetxpress.com/thermostat.jpg

So, which way is correct? My thermostat housing goes on from the bottom of the exhaust manifold and bolts upwards into the manifold. A tube goes into the bottom of the mount.

Re: Correct thermostat direction?

I would put it the way Mercury shows it. Most thermostats have a side that is marked "To Radiator" or "To Rad" That is the side you want up, because the heat exchanger is your radiator.
Justin
justin@sterndrive.cc
www.sterndrive.cc

excellent, thanks. i saw that marking on it, but wasn't sure what would be considered the "radiator".

The side with the spring goes in the engine. That way the engine water heats it direcly. Easiest way to remember.
