I have a 40 HP Nissan outboard, 2 cycle, 2 cylinders with remote steering, controls, etc. My last 2 trips out the motor runs poorly. When wide open it only runs about 10-15 knots. The last time out it would barely go 5 knots with 4 people on board. My outboard knowledge is limited, but applying ,y car and motorcycle experience it seems to me the clutch is slipping. I'm going to take a few things apart for a lok and see, if it looks over my head I'll call a mechanic. Any hints?

If you are getting high rpms but no speed, the rubber prop hub may be shot. Mark the position of the hub and prop, and water test. If the marks are not aligned, buy new prop.

PS: I had this on two stock Nissan props on a NS18, one on NS40C.

Just take the prop off and get it re-hubbed.

The LU clutch is either IN or OUT. Period. No friction disk to slip. Likely a bad prop rubber hub. If all else is running OK with decent RPM, you want a different prop or have a prop shop repair yours.
