I have a 1979 Chevy Blazer 350. There is a what looks like a 3/8 inch allen head in the end of the shaft. How do you get that out of there to remove the pulley or do you need to remove it to get it off?
Help!!! Hope you can help.

You need a special pulley puller for power steering pumps. You could buy one or rent it.Some part stores lend tools like that out.Make shure thay show you how to use it becouse the pulley some times can be a real pain to get off.

That allen key hole is there so that the shaft can be held, it's not a retaining bolt. The pulley is a moderate interference fit (pressed on/off). Like PJ said, you need to take it to a shop that has the correct puller, if you attempt to shock it off or use a BFH you will cause damage to the internals.

I'm gonna go against the grain here. 78-79 is the year that they switched to the press-on style pully. The previous years had a nut that held them on. The allen hole was to keep the shaft from spinning so you could get the pully off. Look real closely for a nut thats only about 1/8 " thick.

If you pull the pump and take it to a shop like napa that has a machine shop they should be able to pull and replace the pulley for you. That way you will also make sure and get the right pump.
