I just bought a 7.5hp Mercury. The seller said it was a 1980. Now that I have looked for the serial number "plate" I find it is missing. In looking around the engine block I see "Ser. No. 12288", and the nos. 85847, 1092, 1019-7313, and 21596589. The carb. is a Mercarb carb. 1364-4929 which I understand indicates it is a Canadian motor. Can anyone tell me what year engine this is? Thanks

None of those are a serial number if there is no plate on the swival bracket look on the port side of the power head there will be a boss with either Comet or Lighting cast in it below that there will be a number stamped thats the serial number

There is "Lightning" cast on the port side of the power head. Above it is a decal in white which says "Comet." Below these two words the following is stamped: "Ser No. 1228 8." Could this engine have been manufactured elsewhere than Canada or U.S.? I want to make sure I am order the right parts. Thanks.

That's the right place but they 7.5HP all had 7 digits the started in 1969 with 2535090 and ended just over 6611886 in 1985, Canadain engines started 2535610 to just over 7221548, the last digits being starting serail numbers for the last years production.
