Broken stringer

I tried to remove the old rotten stringer by prying up and the stringer broke. this goes under the cap of the boat. and I do not have the space in my garage, or yard to remove the cap. I tried drilling a hole in the stringer and prying it out, but the wood broke again.

I prefer not to chisel this out as it could poke a hole in the hull, has anyone run into this? Is uncapping the boat my only recourse.?

Thanks.

Okay, that worked, I have my marine plywood template, but the wood was so rotten it did not match the shape. Just trial and error sawing until it fits? What if there is a 1/2" gap from the base on the floor to the bottom of the stringer I can just get my finger under it. If this acceptable?

1/2 inch gap is fine. I used a grinder to final shape it. Yes in mark out grind. It took many many times to get it. Use a cardboard template and make it to the hull shape. It helps alot when marking the stringer for shaping.

Yup you can place pb under the stringer. you don't want it sitting directly on the hull anyway.
Also pre glass the wood before you install it. Then all you will have to do is tab it in.
How far under the deck is that pc. going?

Chevy,
When you used a grinder did you use a 40 grit wheel or more of a cutting wheel like this?

Thanks for the help

Also, what type of resin and ratio of fumed silica do you use to make pb? I could never find a consistent recipe in the stickies, I probably missed it. Use polyester laminating resin?

Make your usual glue mix then add silica till you get to the texture you want. It's all about repetition, application. Like on the hull or overhead. After a couple times its a no brainer. Make small batches first. I use a small paint paddle to get the silica in quicker.
Good luck.

If the 3/4" stringer is too thin (see photo with gap next to stringer), but two 3/4" are too thick, do I just join the two 3/4" with glue grind away the excess?
Would one 3/4" center stringer work? It's only a 16' boat with me and my daughter.

1x6 pine is what it was originally I am sure that is what mine was. And what I put back in. 2 layers of 1/2 inch if you want to use plywood.

you didnt do enough grinding on the old hull tabing.

there should be no evidence left behind of the old tabing.

That straight line running parallel to the stringer is the evidence that there's still old tabbing. You have to grind down to fresh, clean fiberglass otherwise it won't stick and you'll be doing this all over again soon. That's what Scott is talking about. If 3/4" is too narrow, try 1", but I wouldn't go back with less than what the manufacturer put in place.
