These ball gear nuts are on pretty good. Is it safe to assume it is going to take some heat to get them off. Additionally, is there a good way to anchor them down in the vise. I am also going to have to remove the upper drive shaft nut and it's not coming off voluntarily. More heat?

I just used my 1/2" impact gun on mine and they did not resist.
I like using the impact wrench because there's very almost no torque beam length, so you don't have to hold the gears. Very little torsion to the components. OMC had a tool that held the ball gear if you wanted to use a big breaker bar, but that's asking for trouble IMO....

If the nut and the gear were installed properly, they should have retaining compound on them. It will probably take some heat. I used a bench vise. I too used an impact wrench for disassembly only.

On re-assembly I wrapped the new gear in a thick rag prior to putting it the vise. It kept the gear from getting knicked.
