Don't ask....I know!!...I asked myself the same question....

Anyway... I managed to connect the battery cables backwards on my j115 spl '97 and turned on the battery switch to check....the trim ran backwards was my 1st clue I was a dumb@SS...BUT i never turned on the ignition.....never touched the key ..did I blow my rectifier????

Thanks guys

You shouldn't have. Hook em up right, and then start the motor. If you have a digital volt meter, put the leads on the terminals while the motor is running, and it should read around 14 volts or so. That means the battery is getting the proper charge and your rectifier is fine.

99% yes, key does not have to be on. the key only operates the starter circuit, and kill wires.

No arcing...the battery switch was off.
Guess I'll find out when I fire it up.
