If you get a long shaft motor(5 inches longer), you'll end up having a motor that might be too long and you'd have to jack it up.

I wouldn't imagine that cutting the transom down 1 1/2 inches would be that difficult. I wouldn't do it, though if you don't plan on keeping that motor for awhile.

Measure your transom...I'm curious to what it measures.

That's a bit high. You don't want the cavitation plate to be more than 1/2" or so above the keel. You'll need to lower the motor or get an long shaft extension kit, if one is available.

Do you plan on keeping your motor for awhile? If so, then you're gonna have to cut down the transom a bit.

Just my 2 cents...You have 4 choices to remedy this.
1) Get a long shaft extension kit, or buy a dead motor with a ext leg. Notice the leg extension in pic below. You can try placing a free ad on the antique outboard forum. http://www.aomci.org/ . Also, try salvage yards, ebay, craigslist, etc.
2) Sell/trade your motor for a long shaft. I think I like this option best.
3) Cut down your boat transom.
4) Get a short shaft boat.

FYI. I have a service manual for this motor. If you want a copy, PM me with your email address. Good luck.

We were looking at extentions is there an extention that will bolt right up to the motor/lower end?

yup. I've circled the extension piece. Check ebay, aomci, or the marine salvage sites in the. They should be pretty easy to find.

What do you mean bu transom extension? Is there a piece built up under the motor? Maybe someone added to the transom, and it would be a matter of restoring it to original?
