I converted my 3.7 mercruiser to a 3 wire alternator but I'm having issues. When I hook up the Ignition wire to from the alternator to the + side it doesn't allow me to shut the boat off with the key. If i leave that wire unhooked it turns on and shuts off as normal. any thoughts? I'm stumped. any thoughts. I am doing something wrong? thanks for any input.

Re: alternator conversion problems

You need to put a diode or a resistor in that wire so it doesnt feed back. The resistor can be an idiot light in the dash also, the advantage to this is the light will not only serve as a charge indicator but will come on if you loose the belt.

Re: alternator conversion problems

The alternator is suppose to have a diode built in to keep that from happening. If you ever disconnect the battery cable while the engine is running to "check if the alternator is working" it can damage the one internal.

You can put one inline on the wire as mentioned above or fix the one internal. Radio Shack use to sell em.
