Re: air filter?

Does anyone have an explanation as to why outboards don't have an air filter??
Maybe only other engines i've seen without one are snowblowers we canuks use in our Canadian winters!:p

Re: air filter?

I got a good manual on it and for the life of me I do not see a word about air filters. I guess they figure that there is not much dirt and or dust on the water?

Re: air filter?

Hi,

No outboard uses an air filter. Like jig said we are not dirt track racing.
There is a little fuel fog outside the carb throat when the engines are running so a paper filter would get soaked up pretty fast and cause some problems.
The newer engines have an airbox but that is to cut down the carb noise.
One thing I do if I am driving down a dirt road for a long ways is slip a canvas cover over my powerhead. I have found over the years that is keeps the inside cleaner. The swirling dust from the tow car or truck gets everywhere. The less I have to clean the happier I am.

The Optimax and Verado both use air filters and reason not used on older engines is as jigmister and corm said.

I'd better buy a new engine one of these day to keep up with the group.

Yep, air filters are pretty useless on an outboard. Actually, there's little to do in that area over most water. The only exception that comes to mind might be the Suez Canal.

Some further carry out that thought train by discarding
Timing modules
Alarm circuits
Thermostats
and, of course, the maintainance manual.

Re: air filter?

yeah kinda the same thing here...... where we run our boats there is 100s of miles of narrow sloughs with nothing but farm land on both sides.
often it is quite dusty with a bit of wind. you are never more than about 50 feet from dirt.

not that I have had a problem but the potential seems to be there.
