any body in southern california, are the abalone still plentiful and easy to get? was stationed on san nicolas island from 76 to 80 out of pt mugu. (oxnard) and abs were a favorite of ours.would really like to have a meal or two again. all the seafood places around here never get any, some never even heard of them. so how many of you guys are eating abalone.

From what I understand, there aren't many of the big ones left anywhere in the Pacific. Most of what you find for sale in fish markets are farmed. They harvest them when they're still very small.

I remember getting abalone when I was a kid in Northern CA. You had a tire iron, a measuring gauge, and a big bucket. We'd get ten or fifteen in a day, and they were the best tasting snails I ever ate.

I thought abalone were illegal to harvest due to low wild stocks. At least thay are up here on the island.
