'99 Evinrude 50HP not going into reverse

I have a 99 Evinrude 50 hp on a Sweetwater pontoon. Sometimes when putting in reverse, it has trouble kicking into gear, and it just revs up the engine. I have to to try several times in neutral and reverse before it'll kick in. No problems going forward. Any help would be great. Thanks!

I would be checking shift linkage/cable?

Rotate the barrel on the shift cable a turn or two away from reverse. This may compromise forward shifting, you need to find the happy place between the two
