The boat is a 1987 32' SeaRay Pachanga with twin Mercruiser 454 Magnums and Bravo drives. Alright, so was out on dad's boat this past weekend and ran it across the lake at WOT for about 10 minutes, the port side motor's port side exhuast manifold got blue hot. We shut it off as the temp needle spiked. After letting it cool down it bucked against the starter and eventually broke the starter. He just replaced the exhaust elbows on both motors since they were getting thin. We haven't replaced that starter yet so not sure if it will turn over... He replaced the water pumps last year. We are thinking that the gasket at the elbow went bad and let water into the cylinders preventing it from starting and it bucking against the starter. Any thoughts?

Issue #2 is that the other motor starts up just fine but won't rev over 1,800 RPMs even at WOT, or gradually increasing the RPMs. We were thinking dirty carb but it's nice and clean. Removed the fuel pump and that's fine and fully functional. He has been playing with the timing since it was a bit too advanced and so he retarded it back down, but maybe too far. It has a Quadrajet carb. Any thoughts?

Here's my answers to the adults only thread item #12.

1. Fuel condition. Type and Octane possibly old fuel
Midgrade 91 Automotive grade with ethanol (no treatment)

2. Propeller pitch or diameter, damaged blades
Boat ran fine last season with these props, no damage

3. Restricted fuel pickup tube or anti siphon valve
Fuel pickup and valve are fine.

4. Crankcase oil volume, high oil level can cause aerated oil and lifter collapse
Have to check that. He just changed the oil this season.

5. Marine growth on hull and outdrive
Nope, clean as can be.

6. Wrong gear ratio in outdrive
Nope, stock drives.

7. Restricted carburetor air intake (clogged flame arrestor)
Nope, clean as can be.

8. Restricted exhaust system (broken exhaust shutters/flappers) in engine transom shield or drive.
Possibly, will check.

9. Poor cylinder compression
Compression is fine.

10. Carburetor defective, or wrong type.
Stock and functioning fine.

11. Fuel pump pressure and vacuum
Works fine.

12. Boat overloaded, improperly loaded, or improperly trimmed.
Nope, nope and adjusted trim with no luck.

13. Engine Overheating
Maintaining a good temp level.

14. Engine timing and ignition system operation
Have been playing with the timing, still more testing to be done.

15. Remote control cables and linkage for proper travel to open throttle plates fully.
Work fine.

Well alrighty then, I guess we'll have to figure this one out on our own. Thought we could get some more experienced insight.

Ayuh,... Just Guessing whether something is Fine, Vs. Proving by Testing makes life alittle Tough,...
Like the carb Looks clean,..?? Was it torn down, or are you just lookin' at the Outside of it,..??
And,...
A few other things in your post just don't add up,....
"1987 32' SeaRay Pachanga with twin Mercruiser 454 Magnums and Bravo drives."
Such as there Weren't any Bravos in 1987....

The Reason it won't pull the proper rpms is included in the 15 points,...
You've got to Test,+ Prove each point...
