Question...The trim around the edges of the dash, where can I get that?

Re: 79 SS18 Project

The trim on the panels are original. They were attached with nails, I used SS screws.

Not sure where old original parts can be found, but you have other options. One would be to use
aluminum U-channel.

After I cut the 3/4" marine grade plywood, I used some Gluvit to seal, then KILZ premium primer.

After that, I affixed the FORMICA, then panel edges were encased in the NASHUA waterproof butyl tape, then assembled the trim back on.

Made some homemade decals for the boat. Went to Jo's and found some 3 mil vinyl, used the SS logo and made a stencil, then handcut.

Nice ride!, How does the attachment of the thumbnail work. Is that easier than attaching a photobucket image?

Re: 79 SS18 Project

make a post, then go back and edit it

on the edit screen, there will be "manage attachments"

At this point, an album area will open, choose add to list, basic loader, browse your file, then upload.

The logos look great, nice work.:)

Thanks................found a great web site that has oracal 651 grade vinyl sheets. They sell a 5 pak sampler in 12x24" sheets. Gonna make the side designs out of it, handcut. Anyone needing the info send a PM, or it can be linked on a post.

The main Starcraft logo on the goat was made by a company at $18/side and is 4' long by 5" high.

Starting to get back on the project. Crummy winter weather for all of us, lack of funds, and other obligations. Pretty much done with electrical, trimming the sidewalls and storage areas in the bow, ready to mount steering, tie down the bow deck, etc.

Here are a few pics of the decal progess. Just need to add the gray striping:

Re: 79 SS18 Project

Will post some updated pictures soon. The work was delayed most of Spring due to work and kids stuff(baseball), but have rally'd and the SS18 is getting close to completion.

Anyone have the proper procedure to reinstall the steering wheel, meaning handling of the KEY.

Thanks

Re: 79 SS18 Project

got a lead on a late model MotorGuide 24v bow mount, a little OB tuning and 4 fresh tires for the crummy trailer or find a single axle bunk as a replacement

anyone remember reinstalling steering wheel and KEY positioning?

The rig is looking great:)

What do you need to know about the key for the steering column?

It gets dropped into place and is a bit tricky while bolting it back in.

Some grease will help hold it in place while you do this.

Re: 79 SS18 Project

the semi circle key, how is it initially placed back in the slot? I assume round side IN, flat side tapered to the shaft, slide the wheel on, etc.

If so, how and when does the KEY move into locking position?

I can pop rivets, drill holes, cut wood and metal, paint, do wiring, but I guess me a dummy with steering:rolleyes:

Re: 79 SS18 Project

Star - yeah, the round edge goes into the shaft. I usually angle the key so the flat is a little lower toward the shaft (steering wheel) end. Line up the slot in the wheel and slide it on. Once the key is in the slot push the high end down, slide the wheel home and bolt/nut her up. HAs grease method helps hold the key in place. Hope that helps.

Re: 79 SS18 Project

thanks for the wheel key instructs.................

will try it

by the way, some encouragement for those starting a rehab/resto:

BEFORE:

an original 1979 SS18 that was white with red, subsequently painted with a brush and several coats of metallic silver paint............

After:

many hours of sanding to arrive at the factory primer(I think), then 4 coats of RUSTO clean white metal primer, and 3 coats of RUSTO semi-gloss white enamel.........

Silver/red or White. The white and graphics look it just rolled off of the SC production line - nice one.

Re: 79 SS18 Project

Re: 79 SS18 Project

thanks GA B.............

lots of stuff to still do

the changes were designed to accomodate cast and troll fishing as well as water skiing

to do that, I built that back deck and walled off the old curtain area.....

the deck was built aft to serve several purposes, as a platform for casting, and an area for homemade seating(describe in a bit), and for storage and clean lines.

the back wall has removeable panels with vents for access to the trim motor and perm gas tank, and the entire back wall and deck can be removed if needed, and it also has 6 rod holders while moving, and the back bar will house 6 Scotti holders for trolling.................

the back deck has 3 storage areas with homemade lids, and have industrial Velco for removeable seating and back rests................

the helm and front passenger seating is fixed and in compliance, and I have 4 floor bases, 2 aft, one aft deck, one bow deck for pin seating..............under throttle, nobody will use the pin seating in the cockpit area(5 mph limit)..........these 2 seats are for casting only, hence the removeable seating concept, which are butt cushions and backrests homemade and Velcro when skiing, same in the bow area.........

as far as RED, all the red is gone..................the interior was RED, the topside was RED, the consoles were RED.....................not anymore!

topside gunwales were sanded, primed and finished thanks to RUSTO

the exterior consoles were clad on the sides in GLUVIT drenched luan, primed, then finished with marine vinyl from Jo's in royal blue, in and out, then trimmed...............everything else was stripped and carpeted, and I made the shelves under the consoled homemade................

pics to be added..................
