'77 PTT to '94 control box...can it be done?

I just put my '77 115 with PTT on a newer boat that previously had a '94 (I think) 115 on it. Both have the big red plug so no problems there. But, the motor's PTT harness has a square plug with 4 wires, and the newer control box has a round plug with 5 wires. Can these be made to work? If so can somebody tell me what wire colors on the round plug represent. I can figure the ones on the square plug out by looking in my Johnson manual.

Thanks,
Hunter

The 1977 harness had one wire from the sender for the gauge and that was tan. The newer harness had two wires for the gauge, one black and brown striped and one white and brown striped.

If you have the correct gauge, you can connect the sender to the gauge as shown in the thumbnail using the white and brown wire.

Re: '77 PTT to '94 control box...can it be done?

Ok, so if I am getting this right on the new control box:

Red w/ white = Power
Blue w/ white = Down
Green w/ white = Up
Black w/ brown = Gauge
White w/ brown = Gauge

On the old motor:
Red = Power
Blue = Down
Green = Up
Black = Sender

I think I'm getting this right. Lemme know if its not

Thanks so much,
Hunter

Click the thumbnail and look at the upper left corner, carefully.

Then study the wiring diagram.

When the power from the red/white wire is transfered to the blue/white wire, the solenoid is activated, raising the motor.

The solenoid is not used when lowering the motor, so when power from the red wire is transferred to the green/white wire, the engine is lowered.

The old trim gauge got its negative signal feed from the engine through the harness tan wire and the positive feed from the remote control.

Ok, I see now...I had the blue and green reversed. I edited my last post to reflect this...just in case somebody ever has the same situation in the future.

Thanks again ezeke and td,

Re: '77 PTT to '94 control box...can it be done?

Upon further examination...the motor's harness has different colors than I thought. It has

Red
Black
Blue or Green (hard to tell, I am partially color blind)
Small Black that goes to sender

I'm guessing I will do:
Red to Red
Small black to gauge
But, what about the blue/green, and what about the large black wire. Ughhh, this is frustrating.

Thanks,
Hunter

Ok, I attached a picture with the connector that I had to cut out circled in red. I guess what I am having a hard time believing is that I simply attach black to tan, black to black, red to green/white, and blue to blue/white. ..........Its not really that simple...is it?

Thanks for being patient with me,
Hunter

Re: '77 PTT to '94 control box...can it be done?

Ok, I attached two more pics to clarify further. The first pic is of the two connectors I had to cut off, and the wires coming out of them. The second pic is of the wire bundles now that I have cut off the connectors. I know the small black wire will go to the white/brown wire....but after that I am lost.

On the tnt motor side I have black, red, and blue left over. On the remote side I have green/white, blue/white, red/white, and black/brown left over. I guess I really just need somebody to tell me what wire on the left needs to be connected to which wire on the right. Sorry, I am terrible with e diagrams, and it doesn't seem that the previous diagram shows the same wire colors that I am dealing with here.

Thanks again!

Hunter

You have to wire it as shown in the diagram;

The blue/white wire from the switch goes to the small post on the solenoid.

The red/white wire from the switch goes to the large incoming post on the solenoid - that's where it gets the power.

You really should have two solenoids so that you don't overload the wiring on the 1994 switch.

Jeez, I'm dumbfounded...I don't seem to have a solenoid. The red/white and blue/white goes straight from the connector to the trim switch. I guess I am going to buy a solenoid! Is there any particular type I should get?

You really want to use two solenoids and I have used motorcycle starter solenoids in the past. They are about 8 bucks each and can handle the voltage

You need the trim box, look to see if it is on old boat. if not the trim wiring on the 94 box is toast as it wont handle the amp draw...

Well, it should be on the old boat, because I ran this motor on the old boat for 2 years and the ptt always worked great! BTW, how would a guy go about wiring in a second solenoid?

Thanks,
Hunter

Oh, I see...there is a solenoid for the up wire AND the down wire. You guys are great! I have everything ready to go just need to pick up two solenoids at the auto parts store and get this done. I will be doing this on Monday....I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks again!
