71 25hp evinrude clutch dog

How would i be able to tell if clutch dog and forward gear had a problem. the gears in the foot look great. there looks like a slot for a shear pin im not sure if one is needed or not.

The mating surfaces of the gears and clutch dog need to be sharp 90' angles. Here is a photo of a bad 25 hp clutch dog. You can see the wear on the lobes.

Most people look right at them and can't see the wear. Look where the ears on the dog bang up against the recess in the gear (rotate it in there). If there is any rounding off, they are shot. It takes surprisingly little to make it jump.

Slot for a shear pin???? Are you talking about the profile ground inside the dog? There is supposed to be a spring and two balls in the hole in the center of the shaft, and the balls click into the ground profile to make it snap firmly into gear.

It looks like a slot on the forward gear and a slot on the housing. I didnt know if a shear pin or key is suppose to be there or not.

Are the dog and forward gear hard to come by in this year model if not would my local marine shop carry them?

Your Tha man! And i know they are not going to be easy on my pocket. I might try to check on ebay or locally at the marine junk yard. Ill let you know what i find out. Thanks again

LOL - Let us be the bearers of bad news, FR! The gear assembly is around $500-600. If you buy a used lower unit on eBay for $300 you'll still save tons of $$$.

Thank goodness mine looked really good for a 1970 40hp and countless hours of operation on it.
