Most people look right at them and can't see the wear. Look where the ears on the dog bang up against the recess in the gear (rotate it in there). If there is any rounding off, they are shot. It takes surprisingly little to make it jump.
Slot for a shear pin???? Are you talking about the profile ground inside the dog? There is supposed to be a spring and two balls in the hole in the center of the shaft, and the balls click into the ground profile to make it snap firmly into gear.
