6 HP Tilt Question

Hi Forum,
I have a "new to me" Johnson 6HP Sailmaster, model J6SLCOB, 1985. There is a black knob, located close to the transom clamps of engine. When put in one position, it locks the motor to the cross shaft, effectively locking it in that position, when the knob is turned to the opposite position, it allows the motor to freely tilt up or down. Could someone explain to me the proper operation of this knob, when using the motor, as I do not have an operators manual for the motor.
Thank you:)

Re: 6 HP Tilt Question

The mtr has to be in the lock position if you use the reverse gear on the mtr so it won't kick up. To tilt it up go to the other position.

Re: 6 HP Tilt Question

if you plan on using the motor for trolling in the shallows where you could drag the skeg......keep it unlocked. ( there should also be a shallow water option , but not on the knob )
