Bought a "New Old Stock" clutch dog (part number 375783) but it's not the right part. It has only 22 teeth and is thicker by an 1/8" than the part that was in it that I am replacing. The part I need has 23 teeth ad is not as beefy. See pictures. I don't know if this motor ever had a lower unit swapped on it but I can't seem to find any clutch dogs that match mine visually. Can any one shed some light? High Trim?

This is the picture I come up with for a 375783.

Where did you find that F_R? All the images of 375783 that I find look like tis and only have 22 teeth.

I can't guarantee it is even the "correct" picture. But it was on the parts list on an Iboats' competitor, which I cannot name for that reason.

Is the lower unit on the motor the original one or a newer replacement ??

The original lower unit on a '56 30 hp had a Timken Tapered roller bearing on the pinion gear, and a threaded nut on the prop shaft. Next year, '57, had a beefier pinion bearing with straight rollers, and I believe that also was the year they changed to a slide-on plastic prop nut. Maybe these tid-bits of info will help identify what you have.

Racerone, I don't know the history on this motor. I'm at least the third owner. F_R, your description of a '56 30hp lower unit is interesting. This one has seems to have a tapered pinion bearing but has a plastic prop nut (see pic). When I bought the motor, it came with a box of old parts that had been replaced, some of which were a broken pinion gear with bearing, and an old clutch dog, like the mystery part number I'm trying to identify. Since you say '56's had a screw on prop nut, I'm wondering if someone frankensteined a different prop shaft and gears into this. I'm stymied. Every 25, 30, and 35hp from 55 thru 57 is supposed to have 375783 clutch dog according to the manuals but mine definitely isn't that part number since it is thinner and has 23 teeth instead of 22. I tried looking at later years but gave up in the mid 60's. I'm starting to think Ill just find a whole lower unit.

The 375783 clutch dog comes in 2 forms. The one you have, and like F_R pictured above. They both work, as they end up having the same width, tooth count, etc... I am not certain at what point they changed shapes, but they did. You could order a NOS 375783 and get either one of them.

Now, the mystery dog you have pictured looks like a 305015 to me, as in a 1960 40hp. Pinion isn't right for that gearset though. As Frank stated, it would have had straight rollers on the pinion, not the tapered as you show in yours. Maybe some Frankensteining going on there. I cannot see how that would work though. Let me check on some of my parts.

Thanks for the insight High Trim. I knew I could count on you to chime in. Just for accuracy, I looked up the '60 40hp part number and it's 305105 (not 305015) but it looks like that part might work as, near as I can tell, it has 23 teeth but the lobes are wider so it's not an exact match. I'm reluctant to invest $75 on a maybe. I already have one that doesn't fit. Glad I only spent 35 bucks on it. I have a lead on a complete '56 30hp lower unit for $125 so I might just go that way but I really would like to get to the bottom of this.

I think, as suggested, somebody has swapped the prop shaft from a 35 or 40. Now the fun begins.
