50HP Johnson with Evinrude Controls

Just bought a boat with a 50HP Johnson (50ESL74M) that has an Evinrude Simplex controller. Appears that the linkages are rubbing against both each other and the housing. This makes it hard to put in gear and putting in gear changes the throttle when they rub. What can I do to fix this?

That engine came with a single lever control box. I am not sure one of those old style boxes would correctly. I am sure someone will come along and help out with some more information.

Can anyone tell me what the brass fittings are called on the the throttle and shifter cables? They have a hole in the middle and 2 screws(one from each end) that lock the cables in place. The ones I have are 3/4 of an inch long. I think if I could buy 1/2 inch parts I might be able to make this work.
