50 H.P. MERC Starter/elec. problem driving me crazy

I just bought this boat and it had not been started in a long time. The battery cables were both red so I hope I have the polarity correct (think so). I bought a new starter for it because I thought the old one was shot (very worn). The starter spins counter clockwise when you turn the key, but the gears do not go out to the shaft end (which would turn the motor clock wise). I'm thinking maybe some of the wires are wrong. It has to be something simple. I should probably go spend $25 for a manual. Which way should the starter turn? And the Motor? Thanks!

Check for bad connections or even a faulty solinoid switch. You need at least 9.5 volts at the starter while cranking.
