454 and alpha 1 drive

i just got a boat given to me its a 1978 formula with a 454 and a alpha 1 outdrive. this is a matching set but i dont thing its origenal to the boat. how well does the alpha 1 hold up to the 454's?

78 was way before Alpha drives. The 454 with an alpha was for only 86 to 88. It was not the best idea, and in 88 the Bravo drive came out.

im putting the motor in a 26ft sea ray and i do want a bravo. im looking at a bravo 3 is this a good choice?

well ringm; i hope so. i'm swaping my alpha drive for a bravo3 in our "88" 230 sea ray weekender

don told me this could be a problematic combination when i bought it. i thought as, i was using it at higher elevations i would loose enough horse power i could get by. i found out i was wrong and he is right

Howdy,

For a large "cruiser" type boat, A Bravo III is probably your best choice.

You'll want either a 2.0:1 or 2.2:1 drive. You will also need to obtain a Bravo gimbal and associated hardware.

i believe a 350 im not sure my local marine mechanic gave me the sea ray its a 1980 and in excalent condition just needs a motor and out drive. i figured since i have a working boat now i can take my time and get all the parts that i need to do it right. its a 1980 sea ray 26ft with a aft cabin. what gear would be the best for all around performance the 2.0 or the 2.2?

For a large "cruiser" type boat, A Bravo III is probably your best choice.

If you want to stick with Mercuiser.
