40RL71G - Not making full power

A mate has an engine same as mine. He is making full throttle with the magneto plate at the stop position (full travel.)

His coils are the green plastic covered ones and look in good condition. Points look OK and gapped .020"

Engine does not run rough.

A compression test has not been done but there is definately good compression in both cylinders.

Butterfly valve is at full open position.

Spark plugs are a bit less than .030"

Carburettor was blown out the other day and high/low RPM screws sorted out.

He can only make 11 Kph in his fibreglass hull. The engine is not going hard. The only thing I can imagine is some of the Reed valves are stuck shut.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

could be running on one cyl? maybe trying removing spark plug leads one at a time and see if it affects performance.

Does it idle ok? If so and bogs at higher speeds, I'd agree with Blimp. Check spark.

Correction: Engine is 40EL71G

The problem was wrong spark plugs. I cannot believe plugs could make such a significant difference.

The engine is making full power.:)
