Re: 40hp Johnson lower housing unit??

There are two large plugs with straight slots on the lower unit. Remove them to drain the lower unit oil. DO NOT remove the phillips head screw...it is a pivot for the shifting mechanism.

Inspect the oil when you drain it. If it contains water or is a milky-frothy looking stuff, then you have some sort of leak into your lower unit, which should be repaired. There is more than one seal in the gearbox.

Fill the lower unit from the lower hole, using a specially designed bottle from your marine shop. Your 1960 uses standard outboard lower unit oil. Fill until oil spills out of the upper plug hole.

Be sure to replace the washers or o-rings on your drain and fill plugs.

there are 2 plugs on the lower unit. one on the very bottom the other above the flat plate above the prop. the top is the vent plug, the bottom is drain and fill plug. open bottom, the top. drain. to fill there are pumps made to pump the oil in. but i like to old method of using the lube in the tube. you stick the nozzle in the bottom hole and squeeze the tube to fill. until it reaches the vent hole. put vent plug in, then lower plug. always use new washers when you remove the plug, this is the #1 reason for water intrusion into the lower unit.

Are these washers something easily found? Or do they have to be gotten from a marina or similar?

Get them from an Evinrude/Johnson dealer. Some general marinas have them, too. No substitutes. If yours has washers, use washers. If it has o-rings, use o-rings.

The o-rings are easier to find, so you might want to get a set of plugs that use o-rings when you're in the dealership.

These washers and o-rings are responsible for many of the leaks in lower units, and should be replaced each time you remove the plugs.
