Posting cause I couldn?t find anything on this and hope this might help someone with same problem. Went to change oil on new to me boat. Changed impeller and belt at same time. 1994 glastron 175 ssv, 3.0GL MMDA. Went to local parts store bought original volvo penta filter 835440 oil etc. Went to put filter on and it would not spin on. Water pump in the way. Since I just put impeller in figured I had water pump adjusted incorrectly. OK. Loosen water pump, spin on filter, tighten pump and it is pressing on the top of filter. Ok loosen adjust tighten, loosen adjust tighten, no matter what position it was still pressing a little on oil filter. Not good but figured I would try. Ran boat about 1 hr. on water and of course filter loosened up and spraying oil everywhere. Loosen pump tighten filter, try again, oil everywhere. Loosen pump remove filter back to parts house. Double check filter for my model. Right one. Bought new and double checked belt thinking maybe I couldn?t adjust properly because belt was wrong. Sure enough the belt that was on it Gates XL 7350 was longer by 1? than original. OK give me belt too. Installed new filter, put on new belt. Same problem resting on filter. Tried anyway. Lasted about 1 hr. same problem. Then it dawned on me (du!) The filter I pulled was a quicksilver or other but I didn?t care cause I use oringinal stuff whenever possible. Pulled some of the old paperwork from previous owner and found the oil filter used previously was a mercruiser oil filter 35-866340k01. Called parts house asked for this filter was told its the wrong one for this engine but whatever. Bought. Put on. Changed belt back to the Gates as it gave more clearance. Ran boat. Problem fixed. Filter is shorter than what is called for and I don?t like that but don?t see any options.
Thanks to all for help with other issues on this board. Hope this might help someone else.

I prefer wix or napa gold myself. Use in all my vehicles. Thought I would keep boat marine but I guess the engine doesn't care regarding oil filter. Will try a wix next oil change. Thanks.

Only your wallet cares. The VP and Mercruiser filters are re-labeled filters made at a filter plant and not made by VP or Merc
