my 1998 5.0 is only rated at 220 hp, what are the differences that make this newer 5.0 have more power? and could it be possible to do this to my engine?
The 270hp is the GXI which is fuel injected like mentioned above.
You have the GL motor which is a 2bbl and the GS 5.0 is a 4bbl carb. My 5.0 GL with the 2bbl carb actually had a 4bbl manifold, (the 2bbl carb had a 4bll adapter) so you should be OK with just getting a 4bbl carb. I got the 600cfm eldebrock marine carb and it really woke my motor up.
The 4bbl marine vortec manifold (which you should have on now) is the best vortec manifold available, hot rodders even look for this manifold.
wow hard to believe that a 4bbl woke it up that much?! I was thinking that it was almost a totally different engine all together, i was thinking different heads, cam and lifters..
My father has a 18.5ft forester with a 5.0 alpha and he has a 4bbl, but his has a heasitation going from half throttle to full, kinda a bog for a sec or 2 then it screams.. his boat is just a tick faster than mine. he has a 21p stainless though and i only have a 17p stainless.. so if i get a 21p.. hehe

Air door adjustment, I think it depends on the application, I've had a stock Q-jet on an 83 Caddy Eldorado with a (Buick designed) 4.2 V6, and also on a 72 Caddy with a 472 cu in V8 that physically were the same looking outside.
Also, I doubt it's just a 4bbl making 50hp difference? 220hp to 270hp,,, I can see maybe a 20-25hp increase.
Mike, nobody said that he got 50 hp frm a 4bbl upgrade, although he probably did pick up 30-35 on this engine. He also made a big difference in low RPM throttle response due to the smaller primaries on the 4bbl.
Sherminator - you want to know what it would take to change to a 4bbl? A few hundred dollars and a couple hours of your time. The hardest part(and it is not actually hard) will be running a new fuel line from the fuel pump to the new carb, cause the inlet will not be in the sme place. Although, if you use an Edelbrock carb, you can get a pre-bent fuel line from Merc, they used the Weber(same carb) on small blocks in the 90's.
