2008 75hp 4 Stroke Air Filter?

I have a '08 Merc 4 stroke that has a air filter/silencer and the foam has deteriorated on the filter. I did a search on the net and discovered this is a problem with the new 75-115 motors and they seem to fall apart after just 25-50 hours. What's the solution. These filters cost anywhere from $65-85 bucks. I did remove the foam from mine to prevent it from being sucked into the motor but concerned about any issues with doing that.

Other than dust and noise I can't think of anything. Of course if you have dust on your lake I would replace the filter.

Right, but why did Merc install these in the first place? Has to be a reason.
