2003 40 h.p motor

the specs on my motor says 2003 j40plsrs, but when I put in the computer it come up with this (Find 2004 Johnson J40PLSRS 40hp Outboard Motor Parts by Engine Section) why is it a 2004 not 2003?

What specs? According to the serial number it is an '04 that is what to go by when ordering parts. I don't think they hanged muh if anything in 04 so it really doesn't matter one way or another.

it's just weird that the spec plate on the motor says 2003

You will see that sometimes. I had a 1981 motor that was setup as a 1980 (didn't have the upgrades of an '81) yet it was still branded an '81. You will sometimes see an overlap of a year. My buddy has a '96 28hp evinrude with the red electrical connection, but '96 was when they converted over into the new style electrical connectors. So it happens.
