1996 Evinrude Trim and Tilt unit removal??

A couple weeks ago my trim unit stopped working. I performed electrical and fluid checks and determined the motor needs replacing. Since the unit is in such poor shape, I decided to pull entire unit and repaint while replacing the motor.

Removed 4 of the 6 bolts, snapped the head off bolt 5 and stripped the hex head off of bolt 6. Yesterday, I removed bolts 5 & 6 using bolt grippers and a hack saw!

The unit will not come off boat! I don't want to exert too much effort for fear of damaging the unit. Any ideas?

What it the HP of your motor? Maybe someone will have some detailed knowledge on your particular style of PTT.

Have you removed the big pin on the upper part of the tilt cylinder ?

Yes, the unit should just pull forward from what I have read so far..

Loosen the 4 motor mounting bolts and loosen the big ( 1-1/4 wrench required ) nuts on the tilt tube.

Racerone, thanks for the help! I'm not sure what you mean by tilt tube? Can you explain where to fine it?

Racerone! Thanks for the help! I loosened the mounting bracket bolts and loosened the tilt tube (I think, see photo). Now, I can't get the brackets to separate from the boat! I banged it with a hammer to no avail. It looks like there is some kind of caulk adhesive between the boat and brackets, any ideas?

I'm so close to victory.....
