looking to pick up a 1995 mariner 200. How are these motors suppose to be? Any major problems with them? Are they a good powerful motor? Some input would be great! thanks

Fuel injected or carbureted?

Same thing as the Mercury 200. Its the small block chevy of outboard motors. All kinds of stuff you can do to them or leave it as is if its in good shape. Check the compression and try it on the water. It is after all a 19 year old motor.

Pay for a leakdown test...more important than compression as it will tell you the condition of the rings and cylinder walls rather than just giving you a number for compression...They are good motors but not worth rebuilding if it is near the end of it's life unless you rebuild it yourself..Parts are expensive and the labor is as well...

I will always argue the "not worth rebuilding bit" as being a non starter. Even a completely worn out 2,5 can get bored, new pistons and rings, new bearings and seals, gaskets and even a new stator and CD boxes for under $2500. Thats $2500 for essentially a new motor that will last 25 hard years. Add a complete new lower unit for $900. Show me a new factory 200 HP anything for $3400.
