I am currently running a 1994 Johnson 150 on my 1989 20ft Wellcraft sportfisher and I want to up the HP a bit. I found a 1996 200 for a good price and I am wondering if 50 more hp would make a noticeable difference in power or just burning more fuel.

It is a power increase of 33% percent. You will see a better holeshot, and a few more top end MPH. You will probably burn more fuel, unless your current setup is grossly underpowered, which is unlikely.

Unless you are really having under-performance issues this seems like an if it ain't broke don't fix it situation.

Well I think the boat is a bit heavy for that motor and I am currently turning a 14 1/4 x 17 turning point Legacy prop and get 25 knts @ 4,000 rpms and can't get anymore than 4,500 which I think the problem there is a cracked throttle cable sleeve but it wont go past 4,500.

Clearly you need to fix the throttle cable sleeve.

I run a '98 150HPV6 Oceanrunner on my 21 SeaSwirl bowrider. I can hit about 40MPH with a 19" pitch Merc Prop, at around 4800RPM. However, the hole shot is very good, and I have no issues with power. Just another data point.

I have a 1989 20' well craft with a 1989 johnson 200 on it...it runs out real good, great hole shot and 50 +- MPH loaded. I have always been a fan of big motors, had to outrun a few storms in my time. I would not even consider putting a 150 on my wellcraft. you may need to "beef" up you transom a little. I used a piece of 2X4 galvanized angle to stop sagging transom. you will be adding over 50 LBS I think. it is a great offshore set up. it will drink a lot of fuel at WOT..so I usually run about 3/4-7/8 throttle, probably get about the same MPG as a 150 and have spare HP if I need it.

Yes I just noticed the cable sleeve was rusted and part broken so will replace. I turned a 19 pitch evinrude prop at the same 4,500 rpms and ran 38 mph but I am pretty sure these motors should turn up 5,000- 5,500. Thanks for the info

Yes I will need to inspect the transom but from what I see and feel it is really solid. The boat also has that big OMC sea-drive bracket on as well which holds the 150 so if I remove that bracket and get a stainless marine set back bracket I think I should big ok for weight.
