1994 200 hp Evinrude Ocean Pro Pinging on Acceleration

E200TZERK, seems to run fine and gets my 20' SportCraft center console on plane quickly. 1057 hours, vro still installed and working, fresh gas. Compression is 90 or 95 on all cylinders, from what I've read here, that's good. The problem is that on accelerating, if I only go to 3000 or 4000 it makes a pinging sound, kind of like a car engine low octane knock. If I push it between 4500 to it's max rpm of around 6200, it makes no noise that seems out of the ordinary.

Any idea what is causing this?

Have you tried hitting the choke when it knocks, it might be a lean midrange jet.
I'd check the timing too.
