Recently one of my two 90ish, 225 Johnsons is shifting weird. When I put it in gear at just clutch ahead, it goes into gear, but tends to slip back towards neutral, and clicks just so its part way in gear....(You hear the gears hitting each other) If I surge up a little faster it helps, but doesnt solve the problem until your at 1300 rpm or so. (stock OMC shifters too)

Can I adjust the linkage? I have had trouble with the idle and have set the idle speed higher (1000-1200 range) and have been shifting at that speed. Did I trash my gears already?

Thanks for any help.

Assuming the gearcase hasn't been off and that this just started, disconnect the cable and shift it by hand. If all is OK now, the cable has streached. Don't run it long like this, it doesn't take a whole lot to round off the engagement lugs.

Ok, will do. If the cable is stretched, can I just adjust the linkage? If the linkage is adjustable, how do I do that?

If the cable has stretched, just replace it.
