The manual recommends sae40 oil. Is there a better option today? Will a oil filter for a 1989 GM 4.3L do the job?

The manual does say sae 40 for my temp range, but that was 1989. Thought maybe there was a better synthetic alternative. As far as the filter goes, figured since it was a gm 4.3, the standard filter for that engine wld be fine. Don't like giving extra money to the friendly marine dealership.

Read what Mercruiser says about oil for their engines, right from them.
