You will break your shift cables without it and possibly do harm to the gears. How do you know that it is bad? Maybe it is just out of adjustment?

This should be joined with your other post.
Yes you need it.
If it's unhooked it's possible that it won't shift OUT of gear when your comming in to a dock.
