I've got a old 15' starcraft Startrek V with a 03 25 hp yamaha 4 stroke on it runs great no problems but is a little on the slow side. I usually have a a good load on it and i top out at 22 mph. Im wanting more speed and I can get $2000 for my motor and I found a 1988 evinrude 40 hp tiller electric shift for 1200, I was thinking sell my yamaha and buy the evinrude and pocket the change. motor looks great inside and out 125 compression. Anything I should know about these motors? Should I stay away?
Thanks
Zac

Hope you were meaning to say electric start! Not a thing wrong with those engines. I have 3 in varying years and hp of that same basic design. Easy to work on, great parts support. I do think the $1200 is very over priced though. Even in very clean, excellant condition the top I would pay would only be $800.00

As bonz was indicating, the electric shift hasn't been made since 1972.

EDIT: Actually, the last year for Electric shift in the 40hp was 1970.

I suppose condition is everything. Luck too. And prayer won't hurt either. They certainly are different kinds of critters.

I have a 16 ft starcraft with a 48HP evinrude. top speed 27mph. i think 1200 is high price for that motor. just my opinion. Besides, those 4 strokes are more fuel efficient and more reliable overall.

So i run a 76' 40 hp evinrude. pull start tiller. Starts first pull everytime. My work owns a 2013 15hp 4s yamaha. The thing was a bear to start the last time we took it out. And requires a lot more regular maintenance. I think its what you like. Just saying I bet the 40 hp you are looking at weighs in at about the same too.
