1985 Evinrude... good deal?

I have a 17 foot run about and since the suzuki 75 I had was destroyed I am shopping around for motors and I have limited funds. I looked around and found a 1985 Evinrude 70hp and the price is a low $750 w/o controls. The motor starts well and runs well, is this a strong motor? Is it worth the $750 the guy is asking for it? Really would like to get back on the water as this has been a very frustrating boating summer.<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Brett

I had a similar vintage 75 HP evenrude, and it was trouble free, Three cylinder I beleive, Check the compresion first, and as long as they all come within 10% of each other it should be fine. Try and get some history on the engine, as to when the last time it had a water pump and such. otherwise, replace everything you can when you get it and then you will know where you stand.
