Does anyone know the length the shifter rod is suposed to be set at for 1985 40 hp Johnson model number J40ELC0? and does the distance start at the bottom on the metal plate below the rubber boot to the center of the hole at top of shifter rod? Thanks

Your model number indicates that you have a long shaft or 20" model, but it's been 25 years so use the one that makes sense. The measurement is from the mating surface of the gearcase to the center of the hole at the top of the shift rod, with the unit in neutral.

i'm not sure i understand what u mean by mating surface? the shifter goes into a rubber boot then thru a housing thats bolted to the flat surface?

Look at the outer rim of the gearcase where it contacts the midsection -that's the mating surface.
