1984 Mercury 115 hp I-6- won't excelerate in lake

I just took my "new" boat on the lake today, it idles ok but smokes a little. When i hit the gas it won't accelerate at all, just sound like it's trying but not going. In the driveway w/ muffs on it works fine, please help! (i'm hoping it just needs a good tune up/carb clean??)

a couple things to add, i hope someone can help!........

after giving her some gas and then backing off, lots of smoke stars to come out of the exhaust. The idel is a bit roug and she does smoke more than i realized. I replaced the spart plugs today, no changes. where should i go next??

Jon, I would recommend a Merc Service manual and a rebuild of the carbs. Soak 'em in carb cleaner and blow out the passages with air or gumout. Install new inlet needles, seats and gaskets. Install new gasket sets. Inspect floats and replace any that are cracked or deteroiated. Each float has a little spring on it's top. Make sure they are intact.
