Good Morning!

I have been in search of a newer motor. I ran across a possibly decent deal, I think.

$500 for a 1984 Mariner 50hp 4cyl tiller. Has "spark issues"

Unfortunately I don't know if it has Good compression. Seems like it may be hard to check but I will have to try.

Seller says carb is rebuilt, new stator, and it ran great last year. Now this year there are spark issues and he's done with it.

I have been doing a bunch of reading and it seems possible it could be....
Easy like a tilt switch or kill switch shorting..or more spendy, but still fine at that price, like:

1. Bad trigger
2. Bad switch board
3. Bad coil
4. Random bad wires...

Either way I will do a full electrical check to track it down. Pending a compression check. Is there anything g else I should be aware of with these motors?? I didn't see much.

I am good with some mechanics but am new to boat motors. Rebuilt the previous motor only to develope a Crack in the intake casting. Any help is greatly appreciated.

So it begins, I purchased the motor yesterday. Compression checked out with 130, 135, 125-130, and 125. We had some issues getting the ignition to switch the starter.. I tried explaining it looked corroded. It will be cleaned.

Story goes, the switch module and stator are new. Some of the wiring has been replaced from original. Owner says there are spark issues with cylinder 2. Owner says he checked the coils and trigger and they check out.

Prime suspect is trigger for me. Plan to check with timing light method. Also if I can get my voltmeter back will check entire electrical again.

Super clean though, minus the prop and skeg.

Does anyone know if this website is accurate?
http://www.outboardignition.com/page39.asp

Indicate s trigger should be 800-1400 ohms

I just checked the trigger and it was 3660 ohms on the brown to white wire and 733 on the purple to white wire. That would indicate bad, correct?

My repair manual is in the mail..

Since I am not getting any responses. I figure I can keep updating this so maybe it helps someone else.

I ended up also testing the trigger wires to ground, which should be open. I was getting a reading of 17,000 ohms. So it appears to be bad. One is on order.
