1984 inline 115 hp is it 3,6 or 12 pulse?

I am having trouble with my rpm guage. I have looked in my book to find out what pulse it is so i can put it on the right setting,a mechanic told me to put it on 3 pulse but when i did that the rpm guage would only go to 2500 rpm but i was doing top speed 38 mph and the engine was wide open thanks

If I recall correctly, it's a 12-pole alternator.

12 poles, 6 pulses. Set the tach to 6P.

Yep, if ya get 2000 grand at idle, kick it to 12 and try again..

Definitely 6P. I just got mine installed and set properly. I was hitting 6500 RPMs at 32mph on a 75hp!!! Now set at 6P, I'm running 4300 RPM's. Time for a new prop!

On my 72 135 Stack, set my new Faria Tach at 6. Showed double what I knew it was running at. Set to 12, perfect..your ingition may vary. ..

A little theory. On an alternator, it takes 2 poles for a pulse, thus 12 poles will generate 6 pulses. If the switch is labled P, I guess you'll either have to look in the manual (sheesh) or just guess if its pulses or poles.

Ditto on 6P. The pic of the alternator shown apparently has physical switch positions marked, not electromagnetic pole positions (6P) for 12 pulses, as mine does. Teflex has info on www to verify that 6P is correct for you. And yup, you can usually tell when you are on the wrong setting by the way the engine performs at the indicated rpm's.
