Hello,
I have a 1984 evinrude 115 hp and the vro pump is broken. I know that Evinrude made a second version of the VRO called the VRO2, and I am wondering if I can use this VRO2 to replace the VRO that is broken. Also, if that doesn't work, what is the best pump to use to replace the VRO?? I looked at some pumps, but I do not know if they have enough fuel pumping capacity to work with the 115.

Re: 1984 Evinrude 115 VRO pump question

FYI I am trying to finish a 'vro conversion' on my 1989 140 and that pump was recommended to me as well. I believe it is the same part number as used on the 1983 140 hP so capacity should not be a problem. What will be a challenge is that this pump has only 2 line fittings and the vro has 3, one for the pulse line. The recommended pump was originally bolted directly over a crankcase opening and the supplied gasket formed a seal so the vacuum pulse was transmitted directly to the pump diaphram.

I installed mine by fabbing a bracket with a 3/8 fitting over the pulse opening on the pump and connecting the vacuum line from pulse limiter to the fitting.

Thought I had er licked till I took it out this weekend and wouldn;t do over 8 MPH.

Suspect fuel starvation caused by too weak a vacuum pulse but am not 100% sure. I think this pump would work fine if you can find a spot to bolt it directly to the crankcase. Your 1984 has a greater chance of having a mount (than my 89).

If you're still in doubt look up the part no. for the pre vro motor. I think you find the same part no.
Good Luck

ok, the 0438556 is shown as the number that supercedes 0388268 (obsolete part no. for 1982 115 hp.) Sounds like it should bolt on then run with premix 50:1.

Re: 1984 Evinrude 115 VRO pump question

VRO2 was made available in 1986 for motors still under warranty that had VRO at no charge. VRO2 requires a different pulse limiter and there may be some other differences as well (it's been a long time since I did a changeover). I'm sure VRO2 will work just fine, just make sure you do all the necessary changes.

I am still wondering if the VRO 2 would fit in place of the VRO 1 if anybody knows

Re: 1984 Evinrude 115 VRO pump question

On my '85 140, it just bolted up in the same place as original VRO. It came with a new pulse limiter, a new harness and some other bits and pieces I can't recall. I did a number of others as well, but it's been so long, I just don't remember the details. There may still be a retrofit kit from BRP with instructions, etc. I would call either BRP customer service or your local dealer.
