Drove 300 miles to look at this boat. It is spotless. The guy even had original paperwork for everything. 600 hours on the boat. Very little time on the motor since rebuild in 95. Within 30 secs of looking at this thing I found core plug in bilge. It made me want to puke. Somewhere in his battle with illness, he forgot to winterize. Last time the boat was started was 2001. Sooo, I put the core plug back in and hooked the thing to the hose. After fresh gas and priming it started right up. No smoking, no coughing just smooth idle at 600 rpms. Watching temp it stayed right around 140, let it run, check shifting. Let it run for a half hour. Shutdown checked for leaks, oil, plugs. Restarted several times with one crank. No problems. Took her to the lake ran it for an hour. Ran like a top. Checked for leaks, oil, etc. OK. Here's the problem while running on the water the temp was fluctuating. Seemed like when idling it'd get hotter up to 190 and when running rpms up it'd cool back down to 140. I'm hopin this is just a worn impellar and nothing else. Did I dodge a bullet on this one? I figured for a $2000 boat in this condition I could afford to buy a block and still come out alright.

If the block were cracked, you would have had water in your oil....
Change the impeller & go boating......:)

Am I correct in assuming this would be the Alpha 1 Gen 1 outdrive? When trailoring the outdrive flops from side to side unless it's secured. Is this normal?

How far does it 'flop'?

Look closely at the top of the gimbal/pivot steering shaft.

Any looseness in the fit?

How bad?

It flops completely from one side to the other. You can easiy move the drive from side to side with little resistance.

I should have asked if the steering wheel was turning as the drive 'flopped'?

if so, you have an extremely free steering cable,

if not, then start looking and see where all the play is, start at the gimbal ring to steering pivot pin at the top of the gimbal going up through the transom plate to the steering arm, linking to the end of the steering cable.

What major looseness do you find?

Yes, the steering wheel turns when the drive is flopping around. I guess I'm stuck with a loose steering cable, as I doubt theres any adjustment for that. I really need to verify what kind of drive this is, I'm pretty sure being an 83 that it'd be an alpha 1 gen 1. Once I'm sure what it is I can start looking for some shop books for it.

That'd be a pre-alpha drive. Thanks for the link.
