1981 johnson 115 thermostat direction

Hello, i am wondering what direction to put my thermostats in my 115 , 1981 johnson, there were none in there when i got the motor and i orderd a kit and mounting plate for the thermostats and want to make sure i put them in the right direction, please help, Thank you

adoseth, try here and locate your specific model # and it will be part #78 in the exhaust housing diagram. You'll have to zoom way in to see it though.

Thanks OOC, i am still kind of confused though, the repair manual looks like their showing the long end pointing toward the engine, the parts breakdown looks like the long end pointing away from the engine, i think the long end is where it senses the heat from, so logically it would point toward the rear where the housing that has the hoses to each head are but i just want to comfirm that from someone who knows

adoseth, not real sure about the placement and the diagram gets blurry when you zoom out too far. It appears that one end has a larger diameter and is sided towards the engine while the thinner end is pointed outward.
Sorry I can't be more specific, I have a '98 150 and my thermos are mounted near the top of my cylinder heads.

I'll try it like Will62's image,thats the way i have them now but i found an old johnson repair manual that shows them the opposite direction,wierd, the above image makes more sense though,Thanks guys

The above image is how mine we're when I was troubleshooting an overheat prob. I put them back the same way and all is well

adoseth, will62's image is much clearer.
However, I noticed that the thermostat gasket(part #33 in will62's diagram) is placed on the opposite end than the BRP diagram shows(part #93).

BRP diagram is correct.

Some of the old Johnson service manuals were misprinted.

Aye,i do have it correct i think, i have gasket in the thermo housing #32,then thermostat with long end pointing to the rear of motor and my pressure relief valves are as shown, why they would put the thermostats in the bottom of the engine when heat rises is beyond me
